Most foreign nationals need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada. Find out what travel documentation you need to travel to Canada.
If applicable, it is strongly recommended to start the visa or eTA application process as early as possible. Application processing times vary and could take more than six months.
If you need a visa, apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Secure Network.
Check visa processing times.
Monitor your visa application status.
If you are required to complete biometrics, you will be issued a Biometrics Instructions Letter (BIL). Schedule your appointment as soon as you receive your BIL. You must complete your biometrics before IRCC can start to process your application.
For additional information on whether or not you require a biometric, please refer to fast facts about Biometrics.
Exempt foreign nationals who fly or transit through Canada will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travelers with a valid visa. Entry requirements for other methods of travel (land, sea) have not changed. Don't wait — apply now for an eTA if applicable to you.
You do not need an eTA if you are a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident or if you are a U.S. citizen. U.S. citizens are exempt from the eTA requirement and must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport or NEXUS card.
If you're arriving by air, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the primary airport serving the Vancouver area. Located just 25 minutes from downtown, YVR is consistently rated one of the best airports in North America. There are more than a dozen international flights in and out of YVR every day.
There are several options to go between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and downtown Vancouver, including car rentals, limousine, taxi, ride app services, and public transit. See "Getting To/From the Airport" for more information.
